“I Should Be Further Along By Now” — Let’s Talk About That
This came up twice this week with two completely different clients.
Different industries, different stages — same sentence:
“I just feel like I should be further along by now.”
And I get it. I really do.
We’re surrounded by people hitting milestones, sharing wins, scaling businesses, pivoting careers… and it can feel like you’re somehow behind.
But here’s what we unpacked together:
Further along than what, exactly?
Because most of the time, we’re measuring ourselves against:
Someone else’s timeline
A version of success we didn’t consciously choose
Or expectations we picked up along the way
One client realised she was chasing a version of success she doesn’t even want anymore. That one hit.
The other realised she’d actually made huge progress — she just hadn’t stopped to acknowledge it.
So if this thought has been creeping in for you, try this:
A quick reframe exercise:
What have I actually done in the last 6–12 months?
What have I learned that I didn’t know before?
What would “enough” look like right now?
You might be a lot further along than you’re giving yourself credit for.
And if you’re not? That’s okay too — at least now you can move forward intentionally, not from pressure.
Worth a listen: Any episode of “The Diary of a CEO” that talks about timelines and success — it’s a good reminder that most journeys aren’t linear at all.
