Boundaries Are Not Walls
For years I thought saying no meant letting people down, or missing opportunities. So I said yes to everything. It built something real, DoulaCare Ireland, a business I'm genuinely proud of, and it nearly broke me too.
Turns out the world keeps turning when you start to prioritise yourself. Opportunities keep coming. You don't have to do it all.
What I Got Wrong
I used to think boundaries were walls. Something that kept people out, kept opportunities out, made you smaller and harder to reach.
Now I know they're a way of deciding who you let in and where you give your energy. That's not the same thing as shutting the world out. It's the opposite, actually. Boundaries are what let you show up fully for the people and the work that matter, instead of running on empty for everyone and everything.
Burnout Doesn't Arrive Overnight
It builds in every moment you override yourself. The small yeses that don't feel like much on their own. The times you push through instead of pausing. None of it feels dramatic in the moment. It just quietly adds up.
I know because I lived it. I built a business to multi six figures and ended up in hospital because I couldn't hear my own limits anymore. That wasn't the end of the story. It was the beginning of learning this, properly, the hard way.
The Business, And The Life, That Lasts
Is the one that still feels like yours.
Not the one that looks the most impressive from the outside. Not the one you built by saying yes to everything. The one where you can still recognise yourself inside it.
If you're learning this lesson too, right now, you're not behind. Ask yourself every single day: what's one thing I can do today to give back to myself? It doesn't have to be big. It just has to be honest.
If boundaries are what you're working on right now, I would love to support you. This is something I teach because I had to learn it myself, the hard way.. Coaching support here
