A Conversation About Boundaries That Stayed With Me

I had a really honest conversation with a client this week about boundaries — specifically in business.

She said something along the lines of:

“I don’t want to come across as difficult.”

And I hear that a lot.

But what we unpacked was this:

Being clear isn’t the same as being difficult.

In fact, unclear boundaries are often what lead to stress, resentment, and burnout — especially when you’re running your own business.

We looked at where things were getting blurred:

Clients messaging outside working hours

Scope creep on projects

Saying yes to things that didn’t feel right

And instead of overhauling everything, we focused on small, clear shifts.

What that looked like:

Setting expectations early (not mid-way through)

Using neutral, confident language

Remembering that boundaries protect both sides

One line I love (and often suggest):

“I just want to make sure we’re aligned on how this works.”

Simple. Clear. No drama.

And here’s the truth — the right people will respect your boundaries.

The ones who don’t? That’s useful information too.

If you’ve been avoiding setting boundaries:

Start small. You don’t need a big announcement. Just one clear, kind shift.

It’s often enough to change the dynamic completely.
