Nourishing food during your postpartum recover
Nourishing Yourself in the Early Postpartum Months
We can so easily forget ourselves in those hazy early months after baby arrives. Life is busy, days blur into nights, and our focus naturally shifts to caring for our little one. It’s no wonder we often end up grabbing food on the go, living on toast, tea and the odd chocolate biscuit just to keep going!
But here’s the gentle reminder so many new parents need:
your body needs nourishing too.
Fuelled with good, wholesome food, you’ll notice a world of difference:
✔️ More energy to get you through the long days (and nights)
✔️ Better sleep, even if it’s in shorter stretches
✔️ More balanced emotions and steadier mood
✔️ Clearer mind, supporting memory and overall brain health
✔️ Improved breastmilk supply, if you’re choosing to breastfeed
Postpartum doulas can take the pressure off by batch cooking meals and baking yummy homemade treats for you — all while you enjoy a well-earned nap. Bliss!
My Top Tips for Nourishing Yourself Postpartum
✔️ Batch cook when you can and stock the freezer.
Even simple soups, curries or pasta sauces can make the world of difference on busy days.
✔️ Have handy, nutritious snacks ready to grab.
Energy balls, granola bars, chopped fruit, hummus and oatcakes — think “one handed and sustaining”.
✔️ Buy pre-prepared vegetables and fruit.
Fresh, frozen or pre-chopped… whatever makes life easier. No guilt — just nourishment.
✔️ Keep containers of seeds, nuts and dried fruit by your feeding chair or bedside.
Great for a quick boost during night feeds.
✔️ Stay well hydrated.
A big water bottle within arm’s reach is key. Herbal teas are lovely too.
✔️ Get a slow cooker!
Batch cooking has never been so easy — throw it in, switch it on, and let the magic happen.
✔️ Say yes to help.
If someone offers to bring food, accept it with open arms. Nourishment is community care.
✔️ Aim for balance, not perfection.
It’s absolutely grand if some days are more “toast and biscuits” than balanced meals. You’re doing your best — that’s enough.
Postpartum doulas are here to support you every step of the way. Some doulas even focus mainly on food preparation to nourish your whole family.
